Just looking back through my sketchbooks....searching for a vocabulary of mark that I once knew. I came across this picture of me sketching in Ullapool harbour. I remember the moment clearly....my shoes are red and my coat is a fluffy white sheepskin given to me by my friend Julie. Happy days.
I have been fiddling about from memory this afternoon. This is not what I had in mind at all. I have gone straight back into my comfort zone but I will put this in the sketchbook and try again .....
It can be discouraging when working outside...especially when it is so cold.....but there came a point when I suddenly "recognised" my markmaking for what it is. I am trying to capture the essence of something....creating a memory of a time and place. John Piper was an artist who worked in this spontaneous way using ink and collage to make a record.....I came home and referred to his book Abstraction on the Beach and have now resolved to return to the harbour again and to stay with the process. Wish me luck!
Found my way back into the studio after a few days of being out and about. I have made up 5 small scrap bags...£3 including p.p. please message if you'd like one.
6th. January. 12th. Night. Taking down the Christmas cards I get distracted again by all the news and good wishes and feel wistful that in reality our loved ones are often far away. This lovely card is one of my favourites. Made by Fi in Ness....it is called Walking in a Winter Wonderland and is handcut paper from The Secret Garden...
Do you have a favourite card...one you will tuck away in your journal or maybe even leave it standing on the mantlepiece....?
Enjoying the afternoon light at Builinacraig. The birds are wonderful. Great Black Gulls, several Herons, Curlew, Oystercatchers and many many Shag. I can feel a painting coming on.
Happy New Year to all. Thank you for all your support this year. Sat by a fire dreaming dreams and just enjoying memories. Stay safe.x
